I recently watched I Am Celine Dion on Prime Video. It was with such mixed emotions, chronicling her rise to fame from humble beginnings, the height of her superstardom, her fairytale love, tragedy in losing her husband, and second tragedy in the loss of her voice, one of the best to ever grace the airwaves, CDs, streaming platforms, concert halls, and sold-out colossal arenas including a residence in Vegas. It both made be smile in recalling the breadth, depth, and brilliance of her music catalogue and performances, yet shed tears of empathy and compassion for her in her battle to survive such devastating losses of the man she loved so and the voice that guided and directed her very being, losing two of the important passions in her life. I felt compelled to process my own grieving for her losses in one of the main ways I know, through music.

For those of you who regularly see my blog, you may recall my tribute to my mom for her 80th birthday a few years ago. I related:
So many times we pay tribute to those we have lost. But why does it have to be that way? Why not pay tribute to those close to us while they are still alive? We should have something similar to the Kennedy Center Honors, which pays tribute to performing artists for their lifetime contributions to American culture. But why not pay tribute for a lifetime contribution of caring and love?
In that light I am paying tribute to the divine Celine for her sharing a lifetime of love with us, her fans. And speaking of Kennedy Center Honors, perhaps their selection committee should see this blog post, as she is more than worthy of the honor.
I lost my father when I was just 19, and my younger brother just a few years later when he was 19, with my mom being diagnosed with breast cancer just months later. Thankfully she is a warrior, a survivor. She remarried 9 years later to a wonderful man, gentle and caring, who treated her like a queen, only to pass away after 9 short years of marriage. By the time my mom was 64 she had lost 2 husbands, a son, and a breast. But she is the strongest woman I know, now 82, my inspiration. I remember the first Christmas after my dad had passed my mom and I, tears streaming, embracing, uncertain who was consoling whom, perhaps just sharing in our grief. But truly sharing in our love, for my dad/her husband, and for each other. For love is the answer, love is all we need…

And while it may be easy to wallow in the tragedies that shape our lives, and while it’s natural to focus on those unspeakable moments that bring us to our knees, we must remind ourselves that if we get up, if we take the story a little bit father… If we go far enough, there’s love.
ELENA – LIFE ITSELF

OK, I have to finally admit it – my love affair with Celine Dion. Oh, my wife knows. And there have been others – Whitney, Amy, Reba, Mariah, Shania, Adele. But they’re not Celine. After all, we are birthday buddies, both born on March 30th, though I have 2 year head start on her. And I have other musical birthday buddies, very formidable buddies at that, Eric Clapton, Nora Jones, Tracy Chapman, MC Hammer, Thomas Rhett, Justin Moore… but no offense to them, they are not Celine. She is the perfect combination of Cher, Whitney, Mariah, and Shania – the diva anthem personified.
My love for Celine dates back to the purchase of my first two Celine CDs, her eponymous Celine Dion and the follow up The Colour of My Love (having unknowingly and unintentionally skipped over her first English album Unison), when she was just at the cusp of superstardom. I remember telling my friend Phil about her around that time, and he responded “Celine who?” I subsequently played a few tracks, “Beauty and the Beast,” “Love Can Move Mountains,” “The Colour of My Love,” and “When I Fall In Love.” Eliciting “Oh, of course I know her.” Such lack of name recognition wouldn’t last long.
The character Jack on Will & Grace is obsessed with Cher, and finally meets his idol:
Perhaps not quite my obsession with Celine, and the closest I’ve come to meeting her was every night that I worked at the hospital in NH with Annie, who also hails from Quebec, who sounds and looks enough like Celine that to me she was her doppelgänger. I just needed to get her to sing to me ☺️
So I thought I’d make a playlist, building a case for love in Celine’s life, like that is needed 😂 – the love of Celine and Rene was magical, the stuff of fairy tails, eternal, though alas mortal we are, and infinite love can lead to heartache and grief.
While watching the documentary, my heart ached for her in so many ways. She lost her husband, the love of her life, who early on served as her manager, mentor, promotor, confidant, and best friend, and eventually became her lover, husband, and soulmate. But she also lost her voice, her God-given most amazingly crafted, glorious instrument, her purpose, that led her through life to lofty heights to which she gladly followed. Celine offers in the documentary:
My voice was the conductor of my life. I was following it. You lead the way. I follow you… When your voice brings you joy, you’re the best of yourself.
celine dion
And further:
All I know is singing. It’s what I’ve done all my life. And its what I love to do the most. I miss it so much. Being on the stage. Performing for you. I always give 100% when I do my shows.
celine dion
Over the past almost 2 decades her voice has been slowly failing her as a result of her progressive illness, ultimately diagnosed as the rare stiff person syndrome. She laments:
Music, I miss it a lot. But also the people, I miss them.
celine dion
A video clip show Celine as a young teen sharing
My dream is to be (an) international star, and to be able to sing all my life.
celine dion
And that she has been, and then some. Though in a recent interview she tearfully comments:
I think I was very good. I think I had some stuff that was amazing.
celine dion
I’d say that is the understatement of a lifetime. Very good? Some stuff? She was exceptional. Beyond compare.
In the documentary we see Celine painstakingly recording “Love Again,” the theme from the movie of the same name. It is heartbreaking watching the effort required as a result of her disease to create beauty in song, something that was perhaps so natural if not effortless for her in the past. When listening, it is striking the change in her voice from that of her youth, when she belted out timeless anthems hitting notes that could break glass. Now her voice has been reduced to a shadow of its former self. Or has it? As I’ve listened to the song over and over, almost haunting me, I am struck by how much more delicate, tender, intimate, and vulnerable her voice has become. While I think Celine was referring to her former self when saying:
The performance is way bigger than the song.
celine dion
I think it equally holds true for her current version of herself. Who is she? She is Celine Dion. But in many ways perhaps an even warmer, more personal, more human version of her old self. Again making me love her all the more.
Perhaps what Celine sees as her greatest downfall if actually her salvation. She who is music still finds ways to sing from the heart and touch our soul. Even with less tools at her disposal she can craft songs of beauty, different from before yet no less touching. Remember “The performance is way bigger than the song.” Though the songs come with great price – great effort and angst. And while I can’t imagine her having the stamina to perform a full live show, I’d never count Celine out. As she insists:
If I can’t run I’ll walk. If I can’t walk I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop.
celine dion
And over the years she relates her success has been a team effort, with Rene her mentor, muse, and champion, her band mates, dancers, sons, all part of the Celine-the-superstar team.
If you want to go fast you go alone and if you want to go far you go together.
celine dion
That axiom holds even more true now, where her medical team is of utmost importance. My friends and I upon watching the video are convinced that without her top-notch medical care she would not be with us today. Which would be yet another tragedy, for also important to team Celine-the-superstar are her fans, who find love, joy, and inspiration in her music and example, perhaps now more than ever.
This song continues to play ‘round and ‘round in my head – I love it so…
Rising tides, tears you cry every night seem never ending
But that’s just life
The last goodbye, high and dry it leaves you empty
You might think your world is ending but it won’t
You might think you need to give up, but you don’t‘Cause you don’t have to move a mountain, just keep moving
Every move is a new emotion
And you don’t have to find the answer, just keep trying
The sun will rise again, the storms subside again
This is not the end
And you will love againSummer rain, day by day, sadness fades, the wound is healing
And time goes by, eyes will dry, and you will find someone to heal with
You might think your world is ending but it won’t
You might think you need to give up, but you don’t‘Cause you don’t have to move a mountain, just keep moving
love again – celine dion
Every move is a new emotion
And you don’t have to find the answer, just keep trying
The sun will rise again, storm subside again
This is not the end
And you will love again
Rene, her manager, partner, lover, soul mate, best friend, muse, was perhaps the inspiration for much of the romantic love shared through her songs. So lets talk about love:
Everywhere I go, all the places that I’ve been
Every smile is a new horizon on a land I’ve never seen
There are people around the world, different faces, different names
But there’s one true emotion that reminds me we’re the sameLet’s talk about love
From the laughter of a child to the tears of a grown man
There’s a thread that runs right through us and helps us understand
As subtle as a breeze that fans a flicker to a flame
From the very first sweet melody to the very last refrainLet’s talk about love
LETS TALK ABOUT LOVE – celine dion
Let’s talk about us
Let’s talk about life
Let’s talk about trust
Let’s talk about love
Her breakthrough came from Disney, singing the now-famous duet with Peabo Bryson “Beauty and the Beast.” That put her on the global map.
But also on that album was her first certified Diva Anthem, “Love Can Move Mountains.” This album got my attention.
And her follow-up album, The Colour Of My Love, well, this album made me fall in love…
On its heels came Falling Into You, further intensifying my love.
I can’t listen to “Falling Into You,” “Right In Front of You,” “Right Next To The Right One,” “Seduces Me,” “Tell Him,” “Love Is On The Way,” “Love Doesn’t Ask Why,” “When I Fall In Love,” “I Know What Love Is,” even “Open Arms,” “In His Touch,” and “The Reason” without imagining Celine as a young woman slowly falling for the caring, loving man who was next to her all along, who believed in her, cared for her, encouraged her, and eventually against his own advice, fell in love with her as well, to “be the man that’s mine” and “find the love that never goes away.” A love story even better than Hallmark.
That the love was always there
right in front of me – celine dion
It’s been around us everywhere
I had to fall to finally see
That you were right in front of me
I’m scared
So afraid to show I care
Will he think me weak
If I tremble when I speak?Ooh, what if
There’s another one he’s thinking of?
Maybe he’s in love
I’d feel like a fool
Life can be so cruel
I don’t know what to doI’ve been there
With my heart out in my hand
But what you must understand
You can’t let the chance
To love him pass you byTell him
Tell him that the sun and moon
Rise in his eyes
Reach out to himAnd whisper
tell him – celine dion & barbra streisand
Tender words so soft and sweet
I’ll hold him close to feel his heart beat
Love will be the gift you give yourself
Love doesn’t ask why
It speaks from the heart
And never explains
Don’t you know that
Love doesn’t think twice
It can come all at once
Or whisper from a distanceNow I can feel what you’re afraid to say
love doesn’t ask why – celine dion
If you give your soul to me
Will you give too much away
But we can’t let this moment pass us by
When I give my heart
It will be completely
Or I’ll never give my heart
Oh let me give my heartAnd the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
WHEN I FALL IN LOVE – celine dion & clive Griffin
I feel that way too
Is when I fall in love
I fall in love
With you
I would fight not to ever fall too deep
be the man – celine dion
Never sure that love would grow
Now at night as I lay me down to sleep
I could never let you go
And lying here with you, I still can’t believe it’s true
Never thought that I would ever find a love
That lasts forever
Be the man that’s mine
Find the love that never goes away
Be the heart I know will be
The one that beats for me, be the man
Used to be scared if I would ever get this close
I’m not afraid to touch you now
Long before I knew, I’d be making love to you
I dreamed that maybe I would one day
Lose myself in someone, someday…
…Take me where I have never been
I will follow you, you’ll never be alone
I will run, run to you
I never thought that I would ever find a love
That lasts forever
Be the man that’s mine
I always try to find the love that never goes away
Tell me we will always be together
Make us stay in love this way forever
Be the heart I know will be
The one that beats for me
Wherever you may be
Always be with me, be the man
Songs of love and empowerment to be more “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Best Of All,” “I’ll Be,” “I’m Alive,”, songs of blissful love “Just A Little Bit of Love,” “River Deep, Mountain High”, love caring for needs “When I Need You,” “Because You Loved Me”
For all those times you stood by me
because you loved me – celine dion
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful, baby
You’re the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You’re the one who saw me through, through it all
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice whеn I couldn’t speak
You were my еyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me
Ooh, baby
You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand, I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love, I had it all
I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you
Celine then discovered newfound love in the birth of her children. After much heartache trying to conceive, she eventually was “touched by an angel with love… all in the eyes of a boy…“
I was waiting for so long
For a miracle to come
Everyone told me to be strong
Hold on and don’t shed a tearThrough the darkness and good times
I knew I’d make it through
And the world thought I’d had it all
But I was waiting for you
Hush now I see a light in the sky
Oh it’s almost blinding me
I can’t believe I’ve been touched by an angel with loveLet the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new sun
A new day has come
A new day has comeWhere it was dark now there’s light
A NEW DAY HAS COME – celine dion
Where there was pain now there’s joy
Where there was weakness I found my strength
All in the eyes of a boy
…I can’t believe I’ve been touched by an angel, with love
Celine reminisces fondly about her humble beginnings, raised alongside 13 siblings, recalling a childhood filled with “…lots of gifts, lots of love, lots of happiness…” Continuing such a tradition of love and happiness, she recorded an album of lullabies for her boys and children around the world. Singing lullabies to our children is an outpouring of love, love in such abundance that we never knew was possible:
You’re my Life’s one miracle
Everything I’ve done that’s good
And you break my heart with tenderness
And I confess it’s true
I never knew a love like this ‘til youYou’re the reason I was born
miracle – celine dion
Now I finally know for sure
And I’m overwhelmed with happiness
So blessed to hold you close
The one that I love most
With all the future has so much for you in store
Who could ever love you more?
Among her lullabies were a few songs that I sang to my own children when putting them to bed, in particular John Lennon’s “Beautiful Boy,” and Billy Joel’s “Lullaby,” a song that brings comfort to our children as well as their children, helping us live on in memory and song. In great anticipation I looked forward to sharing each night such love in song when tucking in my children when they were younger:
Goodnight, my angel
Lullaby – Billy Joel (performed by Celine dion)
Now it’s time to dream
And dream how wonderful
Your life will be
Someday, your child may cry
And if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me
Someday, we’ll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die
That’s how you
And I will be
But we never know when tragedy lurks around the corner. Despite great care and love, Rene was suddenly gone. Though not without some regret of not being there at the end to say her last goodbye. Again my heart aches for Celine. She was there for her love when he needed her most over the months and years. There is eventual comfort in such knowledge.
You, you are the love of my
You are the love of my life
My lifeWhen it comes to you and me
love of my l ife – celine dion
I’ll never say the word goodbye, mm
Because we are eternity
Your essence is my lullaby

Is it really better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? If you can objectively step back an ponder, I think you will agree that the passion and joy love brings to our lives far outweighs the sorrow and grief when it is over. Though that is so very difficult to see in the midst of our grieving and loss. But ask yourself if you would trade all those wonderful moments and memories over the days, months, and years to not have to weather the storm when it comes to an end. I prefer love. The love that makes life oh so very worthwhile, that gives us meaning and direction, and that also gets us through those difficult times of loss. Truly, love is the answer, no matter what the question.
Celine, in her music, has shared that truth, exploring romantic love, love of creation, bringing children into the world, love of our brothers and sisters all around us, and love of those who have gone before us, and those who we will leave behind. Listen intently to the lyrics of her songs and you will see, love is all we need.
But in the midst of the war we call grief, it’s hard to let the love be enough. It’s hard no to feel crushed. It’s hard not to feel alone.
Hard to be sure
Sometimes, I feel so insecure
And love’s so distant and obscure
Remains the cureAll by myself
ALL BY MYSELF – Eric carmen (performed by celine dion)
Don’t wanna be
All by myself
Anymore
I couldn’t live without your love
A SONG FOR YOU – celine dion
For one kiss
Well, I’d give everything up
There’s no words I can describe
What I feel deep inside?
So, I let this song say it all
Amidst Rene’s illness, he insisted to Celine that “the show must go on.” It must have been even more arduous a task after he was gone.
The show must go on
the show must go on – celine dion
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
And from Celine’s first English album Unison:
Where does my heart beat now?
Where is the sound
That only echoes through the night?
Where does my heart beat now?
I can’t live without
Without feeling it inside
Where do all the lonely hearts go?
Where do all the lonely hearts go?Then one touch overcomes the silence
WHERE DOES MY HEART BEAT NOW – celine dion
Love still survives
Two hearts needing one another
Give me wings to fly
No regrets, this is heaven sent
Look at where we are, it’s amazing
And if you need me, I will be in your memory……’Cause I don’t wanna be here without you
PERFECT GOODBYE – celine dion
I’d rather just bottle time
Open up the memory and keep you by my side
I can’t believe that I haven’t found you
Baby, take a look around
Everything is perfect now
Woah, call the man
CALL THE MAN – celine dion
Who deals in once upon a time
Maybe he
Can mend this broken heart of mine
Shine a light ahead
Now the future isn’t clear
It isn’t clear
Call the man
He’s needed here
And in part with the encouragement of an unlikely ally, Ryan Reynolds, who featured a spot for her and only her in his movie Deadpool 2, she was inspired to try move onwart, to find courage amidst tragedy and heartache, to not let such grief silence her voice and her song.
Courage
Don’t you dare fail me now
I need you to keep away the doubts
I’m staring in the face of something new
You’re all I got to hold on to
So courage
Don’t you dare fail me now‘Cause it’s not easy
courage – celine dion
When you’re not with me
This world of madness goes faster now
And it’s a train wreck but I won’t crash yet
Long as your echo never fades out
Who knew way back when that Celine’s foreboding love song of longing and heartache from Titanic could pertain to the shipwreck of her heart:
Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go onFar across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go onNear, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and onLove can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go ’til we’re goneLove was when I loved you
One true time I’d hold to
In my life, we’ll always go onNear, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on (why does the heart go on?)
Once more, you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and onYou’re here, there’s nothing I fear
MY HEART WILL GO ON – celine dion
And I know that my heart will go on
We’ll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on
But her heart will go on and on…
I’m flying on my own
FLYING ON MY OWN – celine dion
On the wings of your love
Don’t surrender
THE WAY IT IS – celine dion
‘Cause you can win
In this thing called love
When you want it the most
There’s no easy way out
When you’re ready to go
And your heart’s left in doubt
Don’t give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that’s the way it is
I saw your teardrops and I heard you cry
All you need is time
Seek me and you shall find
You have everything and you’re still lonely
It don’t have to be this way
Let me show you a better dayAnd then you will see the morning will come
And all of your day will be bright as the sun
So all of your fears, just cast them on me
How can I make you see?I’ll be your cloud up in the sky
I’ll be your shoulder when you cry
I hear your voices when you call me
I am your angelAnd when all hope is gone, I’m here
No matter how far you are, I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
I am your angel
I’m your angelAnd when it’s time to face the storm
I’ll be right by your side
Grace will keep us safe and warm
And I know we will survive
And when it seems as if your end is drawing near
(End is drawing near)
Don’t you dare give up the fight (Oh no)
Just put your trust beyond the skiesI’ll be your cloud up in the sky
I’M YOUR ANGEL – CELINE DION & R. KELLY
I’ll be your shoulder when you cry
I hear your voices when you call me
I am your angel
And the tide turns. Love wins out in the end. With the support of those around us, who shower us with love and support. And the love we share with those around us – family, friends, and for Celine – fans. If you want to receive love you need to give love away. Or as John & Paul sing, if you want to take love, you need to make love.

And for those who have lost the love of their life, their partner, it may seem such love may never come again. And perhaps it won’t. But sometimes it will, as my mom found out. She had the fortune of having two men who loved and adored her, who treated her like a queen, though she lost them much too soon. But I don’t think she’d trade the time spent with each of them for anything, for as Celine sings, these are special times. Certainly, she wished for more. But life has its own path, with or without our approval. And Celine sings, for the movie Love Again, about falling in love once again:
When the sun went down on that day
I never thought that love would come back to me
When I closed my eyes and tried to dream
Darkness was the only thing I could seeI had run out of hope
Reached the end of the road
Hit the rocks at the bottom with no farther to go
But just when I thought I was destined to end up all alone
You showed me there’s more to this lifeI can’t believe I’m falling in love once again
FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN – celine dion
I can’t believe I’m falling in love, but I am
I never thought that I would be strong enough to move on
No, this wasn’t part of the plan
I can’t believe I’m falling in love
But I’m falling in love once again
You can fall a thousand time
You can feel like you’ve lost your mind
But love will find a way, oh yeah, yeah
And a minute can change your life
And a moment can make you right
Love will find a place, hey, yeahIf you got one heart you are followin’
ONE HEART – celine dion
One dream keeps you wondering (is it your)
Love lights your way through the night
One wish that keeps you tryin’ (is it your)
What’s your silver linin’ (is it your)
Loves lights your way through the night
When you feel like you can’t go on
Don’t you know you’ll never walk alone
You live in meGonna stand by your side now
STAND BY YOUR SIDE – celine dion
Let me kiss all your tears away
You can stay in my arms now
And I know I can make you believe again
In these moments, moments of our lives
All the world is ours
And this world is so right
You and I sharing this time together
Sharing the same dream
As time goes by we will findThese are the special times
THESE ARE SPECIAL TIMES – celine dion
Times we’ll remember
These are the precious times
The tender times we’ll hold in our hearts forever
These are the sweetest times
These times together
And through it all, one thing will always be true
The special times are the times I share with you
And beyond this life, our love lives on in those we leave behind, as Mufassa sings in The Lion King:
They live in you (Hela hey mamela, hela)
THEY LIVE IN YOU – james earl jones – THE LION KING
They live in me (Hela hey mamela, hela)
They are watching over (Hela hey mamela, hela)
Everything we see (Hela hey mamela, hela)
In every creature (Hela hey mamela, hela)
In every star (Hela hey mamela, hela)
In your reflection
They live in you
Immortality
I make my journey through eternity
I keep the memory of you and me
InsideFulfill your destiny
Is there within the child…… We don’t say goodbye
I’ll make them all remember me‘Cause I have found a dream that must come true
Every ounce of me must see it through
But you are my only
I’m sorry I don’t have a role for love to play
Hand over my heart, I’ll find my way
I will make them give to meImmortality (oh, baby)
There is a vision and a fire in me (oh)
I keep the memory of you and me
InsideAnd we don’t say goodbye (and we don’t say goodbye)
IMMORTALITY – celine dion & The bee gees
With all my love for you
And what else we may do
We don’t say goodbye
And it is only fitting that Celine came full circle with Disney, who helped launch her career with “Beauty & The Beast,” to go on to record for the live action version of the movie (starring Emma Watson, a movie which I just loved, such spectacular singing, acting, and scenery, again magical), “How Can A Moment Last Forever.” How appropriate for her to sing our (and her) song lives on – her songs will live on long after she and we are gone. Their beauty and meaning are timeless. Perfection:
How does a moment last forever?
How can a story never die?
It is love we must hold onto
Never easy, but we try
Sometimes our happiness is captured
Somehow, our time and place stand still
Love lives on inside our hearts and always will
Minutes turn to hours, days to years then gone
But when all else has been forgotten
Still our song lives on
Maybe some moments weren’t so perfect
Maybe some memories not so sweet
But we have to know some bad times
Or our lives are incomplete
Then when the shadows overtake us
Just when we feel all hope is gone
We’ll hear our song and know once more
Our love lives on
How does a moment last forever?
How does our happiness endure?
Through the darkest of our troubles
Love is beauty, love is pure
Love pays no mind to desolation
It flows like a river through the soul
Protects, proceeds, and perseveres
And makes us wholeMinutes turn to hours, days to years then gone
HOW DOES A MOMENT LAST FOREVER – Celine dion

Enjoy the moment.
Love the moment.
